About Lucy’s
Serving Up Creative Dishes in
the Creston Neighborhood
Where It All Started
The origin of Lucy’s dates back to 1958, when Sy VanderKooy purchased the land at 1747 Plainfield Ave to build a food market, which is now the café portion of Lucy’s. His business was so successful that he decided to expand in 1963, purchasing the adjacent lot and adding a two-story space.
While Sy’s business closed in the early ’70s, he owned the building until his passing in 2009. Seven years later, Sy’s children purchased and renovated that very same building to create what is now affectionately known as Lucy’s.
The Future of Lucy’s
In December 2022, Lucy’s was purchased by Essence Restaurant Group—one of the most established restaurant teams in West Michigan—who also operates Bistro Bella Vita, The Green Well and grove in Heartside and East Hills, GR.
The decision to bring Lucy’s into the family of restaurants was a simple one, really. It checked all the boxes for Essence’s expansion plan and resembled the restaurant group’s vision of The Kindness Principle.
The current name and staff remain and the two teams have now merged to create one unified vision for Lucy’s: to create an enhanced hospitality experience with superior food, beverage and service.
